The Sauls

The surname, Saul, is particularly prevalent around Preston, Garstang and Liverpool. It is a very old English surname with Scandinavian roots. There were multiple Saul families in the Preston/Bamber Bridge/Higher Walton area in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Sauls were Catholics. Their genealogy is well documented in Catholic Church records back to the 18th century.

Thomas Saul, my great, great, great grandfather was a shoemaker. By the time Daniel, his son, was old enough to work, the cotton industry had taken off in Lancashire. Daniel and his son William were cotton spinners.  His sisters and brothers were also employed in the cotton industry as spinners or weavers. My grandfather, James was also a cotton spinner until the 1930s when the cotton industry was declining. He then worked as an ashphalter.
